PODACI:
Tuzla, Brčanska Malta
Mjesto/lokacija: Tuzla, Armije Republike Bosne i Hercegovine Street
Entitet: Federation of Bosnia and Hezegovina
Etnička grupa: Miscellaneous
Druge informacije:
The “Tuzla column” incident took place on 15 May 1992 in Tuzla’s Brčanska Malta quarter. That day, in line with previous agreements, the 92nd motorised brigade of the JNA was retreating from the Husinska buna Barracks in Tuzla. According to the plan, the JNA was to withdraw from BiH by 19 May.
As the column was crossing the intersection in Brčanska Malta, shooting broke out, followed by a skirmish with a large number of casualties. The exact number has not been determined because, among other things, it was difficult to identify many of the casualties who died when the ammunition that was being transported exploded. The probable number of casualties among JNA soldiers is around 50, while four the Tuzla side it is four.
There are varying interpretations of this incident. The Serb side claims the column was attacked and that the attack was premeditated and planned, thereby violating the agreement on peaceful withdrawal of units from Tuzla and BiH. The Territorial Defence and Tuzla Police claim that the shooting started from the JNA column, that they were defending themselves from the attack, that the JNA breached the agreement on peaceful withdrawal by taking all of its weapons, and that they had the right to prevent the removal of weapons that belonged to the people of Tuzla.
There is no sign to mark this event at the site of the atrocity but there is a memorial fountain dedicated to the defenders of Tuzla.
15 May is marked as the Day of Defence of Tuzla, when citizens of Tuzla and veterans organisations honour the defenders killed in the recent war.
On the same day, a memorial is held for the JNA soldiers killed in the Tuzla column, in the presence of members of their families and a delegation from the Republic of Srpska.
